Statement of Purpose

For some scholarships, the Statement of Purpose is “the single most important part of your application that will tell the admissions committee who you are, what has influenced your career path so far, your professional interests and where you plan to go from here”.

Below is the statement of purpose in my application for Erasmus Mundus Global Studies Program. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Bac Trong, Anh Tinh and Mr. John for your commenting on and proofreading of the essay.

This sample post for for your reference only, not for being copied under any form without the author’s permission.

I live in a dramatically-globalizing world where brainpower has replaced manpower and natural resources as the key to development. I live in a country rich in traditions and culture but underdeveloped in economy, where many potentials have not been awakened. I live in a competitive environment where no excuse is available for ignorance, indecisiveness and sluggishness.

This realization has urged me into action to work out a master plan for my career development and greater contributions to the prosperity of my homeland. As a researcher at the Institute for International Relations (IIR), the country’s leading think-tank in the field of external affairs at the service of top Vietnamese leaders, and a future diplomat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam (MOFA), I have set forth clear long-range goals to achieve. As a diplomat, I hope that someday I will have the honor to represent my beloved country abroad. As a researcher, my professional goal is to become a senior foreign policy researcher and adviser to Vietnam’s top leaders. The fact that Vietnam’s external relationships have been remarkably expanded over the last ten years gives rise to a more practical need of doing research on foreign policy and international relations. Against that background, Vietnam still lacks a pool of adept specialists with in-depth understanding of political science and international relations, and of strategists who are able to mastermind Vietnam’s foreign policy in the era of globalization.

Furthermore, in the Center for European and American Studies, I am assigned to deal with European Studies, especially European integration process. My duty involves in doing research works, making periodical academic reports and forecasts on the European Union and its relations with other countries, and thereby, directly and indirectly contributing to shaping Vietnam’s foreign policy and defining its reactions to any relevant development. Therefore, I am now in great need of enriching my knowledge of and obtaining a real image of Europe and its integration process. In addition, I really want to hear Europeans themselves talking about their aspiration in building a united Europe and its institutionalization. All of these produce the rationale behind my determination to hunt for a master’s program in a related study focus in an accredited European university. Thus, the Erasmus Mundus scholarship program has fallen into my contemplation.

After thoroughly studying the program, I am more confident that the MA Program Global Studies within the Erasmus Mundus Program is more than what I would expect. First, in terms of study focus, as I learnt from the instruction of the program’s coordinator and the website, the program takes globalization and global connections as a starting point to analyze different perspectives on and all aspects of the process and its implication. It goes without saying that globalization is an unavoidable process that is exerting greater and greater impacts on international relations, every nation’s development and every individual’s life. Hence, it needs to be studied exhaustively. However, I do hope that, through the program, I would touch upon European perspectives on globalization and globalizing effects on European integration. I also really want to find out the nature of the interactions between globalization and regional integration that is most clearly manifested in the EU model. Are these two processes contradictory or consistent?

Second, I am really fascinated by the way the program is organized. The Master’s program offered by a consortium of four accredited European universities (University of Leipzig, University of Vienna, University of Warsaw and London School of Economics and Political Sciences) would give me a precious chance to obtain a full image of a Europe as a whole. A Vietnamese proverb says that “a day’s travel brings you a basketful of wisdom”. Therefore, thanks to living in different cultures and studying at different learning environments, the program will enable me to learn more about European cultures, and thereby explore the outlooks of different member states, which represent different levels of development and geographical settings, on the global issues and the European integration. I would like to discover the factors which have driven the one-time fragmented Europe into a nearly single entity at present, and remedies which have been used to cure the past hostilities, especially that between Germany and France. In this respect, I would look into liberalism, constructivism and institutionalism as predominant theories that have laid the foundation for the European integration. The answers to these questions are very valuable for me to study the prospects of the East Asian Community, which is still in its initial stage of establishment.

Third, as part of the shared learning community, through a wide range of activities and courses offered within the program, I could build up a long-lasting professional relationship with European intellectual circles, which is of great importance to my career as a researcher of European Studies. These four leading institutions bring together numerous European leading scholars and excellent students, not only from Europe but also from all the corners of the world. So, making friendship and professional relations with these individuals is definitely a priority. From my perspective, these kinds of connection, within classes, between current students and alumni, among alumni, and between alumni and institutions serve as a very helpful channel for the exchange of viewpoints, knowledge and experience sharing, consultancy and cooperation in large-scale projects. Being part of this network will be very valuable to my future work.

Last but not least, this
Erasmus Mundus Global Studies will give me a great chance to study in top-notch higher education institutions such as those in University of Leipzig, University of Vienna, University of Wroclaw and London School of Economics and Political Sciences. I am really fascinated by their world-class excellence in teaching and research. Knowledge is no doubt the most important but I do hope that, through this master’s course, I can acquire more than knowledge itself, but new approaches, new analytical and critical skills, and systematic thinking. The combined skills and knowledge I get from this course may evolve into my way of working and thinking, which can be brought into full play at work and have positive impacts on my students and colleagues. Further, learning in this stimulating educational environment at these universities will enable me to get an in-depth understanding and real experience of these open-minded, vibrant and multi-cultural societies. And ultimately, visiting Germany, the homeland of philosophy that has produced a large number of great thinkers such as Immanuel Kant, Hegel, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Martin Heidegger, and other European countries is my long time dream.

In conclusion, I would like to reaffirm that a Master’s degree in Global Studies from the Erasmus Mundus Program is an important stepping stone in my education and my career. I also realize that there is a long and bumpy road ahead that I need to travel before the goals I set can be achieved. But once I make up my mind, I have both determination and patience to accomplish my goals no matter how hard it may become. I strongly believe that I will overcome any obstacles through my brainpower, will power and a bit of luck. I am very much obliged to you if you will give me the privilege of pursuing this master’s program in your reputable schools. I am sure I am worth it.

Five Tough Questions Every Entrepreneur Must Ask about Growth

Getting a venture underway is often easier than keeping it going and growing. At each major stage from start-up to sustainable success, entrepreneurs face tough questions about shifting gears, making major changes, and letting go of people, partners, and products. For new businesses, inability or unwillingness to change can land them in the statistics about high failure rates at the five-year mark. For non-profits, clinging to the past can lead to marginality and stagnation.

To keep an enterprise on track while facing the often-pleasant challenge of growth requires making sometimes-painful adjustments in these five areas:

The People. One of the hardest questions is when to change the people — not just individually, but the whole mix. Founders often start with friends and true believers who work hard because of zeal for the cause or hope for future returns. They occupy multiple overlapping roles. But do the people with single-digit badge numbers or members of the founding generation have the skills the organization needs as it creates routines and requires depth in every specialty? Who can make the cut? A winery I knew from its beginning kept the original group longer than the business could afford, and loyalty got in the way of bringing in experienced people "above" the people who felt they were founders and thus privileged to call the shots. Raise a glass to courageous leaders willing to tell people they must either grow or go.

Finances. Whether the original source of funds is venture capital or venture philanthropy, an investor base or a donor base, each growth phase challenges organizations to shift assumptions and thus change practices. Perhaps investors expect customers to take over as funders of growth by paying more (or paying at all), a challenge dot-com companies faced in the first Internet wave and social media companies face now. Non-profits also outgrow friends-and-family angels or local sources and must find sustainable revenue and capital sources. How do you move from being discretionary nice-to-have in a portfolio to essential-to-fund? Where are the new sources appropriate to a new, larger size? A multi-site non-profit went from local businesses close to the founding city to national funders in government and foundations to a revenue model replicable in every site through ongoing school budgets on a fee-for-service basis.

Partners and Allies. The best organizations are attuned to the need for key external relationships that provide resources and support. At the same time, entrepreneurs do not want to be captive to the needs and desires of their first distribution partners, component suppliers, source of talent, or marketing allies. It is tricky to know how to nurture and draw benefits from key partners without being subsumed by them — or subject to damage if they stumble — and, at the same time, add to a partner set without creating conflicts. Which partners should be downplayed or replaced as the organization grows? How can key relationships be managed to lessen dependence while seeking new, more relevant, allies? And with growth comes the need for entirely new types of relationships — which is why Facebook now has an enlarged Washington office.

Organizational Culture. Are you making explicit what the organization stands for in tangible ways that can be transmitted and endure? Are you on guard against drifting away from the culture? Numerous studies, including my own, show that an emphasis on organizational culture is associated with continuing excellence. Values, stories, artifacts, and rituals provide a source of identity that makes the organization feel the same, in pursuit of the same mission even while everything else changes. Culture provides internal glue. As an organization grows, what was once informal must be documented, codified, memorialized, and passed on to new people. Savvy entrepreneurs ensure that their organizations are built to last by stressing culture. At every stage, they invest in preserving fundamental values and principles while adding new iconic stories that reflect them.

Outcomes and Impact. What results are being produced, for whom, and are these sufficient? In the beginning it's enough to show that it can be done at all — to address a good cause or to prove that something works in a handful of markets. In the next phase, you might look at growth indicators — we did more this year than last year. Recall the signs that McDonald's posted outside its stores during its rapid growth phase, heralding how many millions of hamburgers had been served. Sooner or later a new question arises: Are you making a difference that makes the venture more essential?

Ventures that go from proof of concept to "permanent" player have become icons, household names, or must-have players because they can show differentiated user, recipient, or national benefits — that they have impact not just on their immediate customers but on the entire industry. We all know that success provokes imitation. As the organization grows, its distinctiveness gets harder to maintain. But often many in and around the organization come to believe that existence is a sufficient sign of importance — a trap particularly for non-profits. Asking the "so what if we weren't here?" question about making a difference can provoke soul-searching and strategy change.

The bottom line: In addition to the challenges of innovation to ensure new offerings and new capabilities, entrepreneurs and organization founders must also be alert to the ways that the organization itself changes as a result of growth. It is important to anticipate those developments and ask the five big questions at every stage in order to get ahead of change and master it.

How to Build Confidence

Very few people succeed in business without a degree of confidence. Yet everyone, from young people in their first real jobs to seasoned leaders in the upper ranks of organizations, have moments — or days, months, or even years — when they are unsure of their ability to tackle challenges. No one is immune to these bouts of insecurity at work, but they don't have to hold you back.

What the Experts Say

"Confidence equals security equals positive emotion equals better performance," says Tony Schwartz, the president and CEO of The Energy Project and the author of
Be Excellent at Anything: The Four Keys to Transforming the Way We Work and Live
. And yet he concedes that "insecurity plagues consciously or subconsciously every human being I've met." Overcoming this self-doubt starts with honestly assessing your abilities (and your shortcomings) and then getting comfortable enough to capitalize on (and correct) them, adds Deborah H. Gruenfeld, the Moghadam Family Professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior and Co-Director of the Executive Program for Women Leaders at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Here's how to do that and get into the virtuous cycle that Schwartz describes.

Preparation

Your piano teacher was right: practice does make perfect. "The best way to build confidence in a given area is to invest energy in it and work hard at it," says Schwartz. Many people give up when they think they're not good at a particular job or task, assuming the exertion is fruitless. But Schwartz argues that deliberate practice will almost always trump natural aptitude. If you are unsure about your ability to do something — speak in front of large audience, negotiate with a tough customer — start by trying out the skills in a safe setting. "Practice can be very useful, and is highly recommended because in addition to building confidence, it also tends to improve quality. Actually deliver the big presentation more than once before the due date. Do a dry run before opening a new store," says Gruenfeld. Even people who are confident in their abilities can become more so with better preparation.

Get out of your own way

Confident people aren't only willing to practice, they're also willing to acknowledge that they don't — and can't — know everything. "It's better to know when you need help, than not," says Gruenfeld. "A certain degree of confidence — specifically, confidence in your ability to learn — is required to be willing to admit that you need guidance or support."

On the flip side, don't let modesty hold you back. People often get too wrapped up in what others will think to focus on what they have to offer, says Katie Orenstein, founder and director of The OpEd Project, a non-profit that empowers women to influence public policy by submitting opinion pieces to newspapers. "When you realize your value to others, confidence is no longer about self-promotion," she explains. "In fact, confidence is no longer the right word. It's about purpose." Instead of agonizing about what others might think of you or your work, concentrate on the unique perspective you bring.

Get feedback when you need it

While you don't want to completely rely on others' opinions to boost your ego, validation can also be very effective in building confidence. Gruenfeld suggests asking someone who cares about your development as well as the quality of your performance to tell you what she thinks. Be sure to pick people whose feedback will be entirely truthful; Gruenfeld notes that when performance appraisals are only positive, we stop trusting them. And then use any genuinely positive commentary you get as a talisman.

Also remember that some people need more support than others, so don't be shy about asking for it. "The White House Project finds, for example, that many women need to be told they should run for office before deciding to do so. Men do not show this pattern of needing others' validation or encouragement," says Gruenfeld. It's okay if you need praise.

Take risks

Playing to your strengths is a smart tactic but not if it means you hesitate to take on new challenges. Many people don't know what they are capable of until they are truly tested "Try things you don't think you can do. Failure can be very useful for building confidence," says Gruenfeld. Of course, this is often easier said than done. "It feels bad to not be good at something. There's a leap of faith with getting better at anything," says Schwartz. But don't assume you should feel good all the time. In fact, stressing yourself is the only way to grow. Enlisting help from others can make this easier. Gruenfeld recommends asking supervisors to let you experiment with new initiatives or skills when the stakes are relatively low and then to support you as you tackle those challenges.

Principles to Remember

Do:
  • Be honest with yourself about what you know and what you still need to learn
  • Practice doing the things you are unsure about
  • Embrace new opportunities to prove you can do difficult things

Don't:
  • Focus excessively on whether you or not you have the ability - think instead about the value you provide
  • Hesitate to ask for external validation if you need it
  • Worry about what others think — focus on yourself, not a theoretical and judgmental audience

Case Study #1: Get the knowledge and get out of your own way

In 2010, Mark Angelo, was asked by the CEO of Hospital for Special Surgery in New York to create and implement a program to improve quality and efficiency. Mark was relatively new to the organization. He had worked as a business fellow for the previous year but had recently taken on the role of director of operations and service lines. Even though he had background in operations strategy from his days as a management consultant, he was not familiar with the Lean/Six Sigma principles he'd need to use for this project and didn't feel equipped to build the program from scratch. He was particularly concerned he wouldn't be able to gain the necessary support from the hospital's physicians and nurses. What would they think of a young administrator with no hospital experience telling them how to improve quality and increase efficiency?

For five months, Mark struggled to get the project on track and his confidence suffered. He knew that his apprehension was in part due to his lack of knowledge of Six Sigma. He read a number of books and articles on the subject, talked to consulting firms that specialized in it, and spoke with hospitals that had been successful in developing and implementing similar programs. This helped but he realized he still didn't know if he would be able to get the necessary people on board. "I was anxious and stressed because I had no idea how I was going to transform the organization. I knew I couldn't do it on my own. It was going to take a collective effort that included our management team and all of our staff," he said.

He talked with the CEO who had supported him since the beginning. He also looked to his family for emotional support. Through these conversations he realized that his anxiety stemmed from a desire to be liked by his colleagues and therefore to avoid conflict. "After many discussions with my CEO and observing how he handled these situations, I learned that it is better to strive to be well-respected than well-liked," he said.

This was a turning point for Mark. Instead of worrying so much about what others thought of him, he focused on doing what was best for the patient and the institution. In December, he presented the vision for the program to the entire medical staff. While he was nervous about how it would be received, he knew this was a critical moment. "I was able to get up in front of one our toughest constituencies and present the vision that we had been developing over the past few months," he says. His presentation was met with applause. "In the end, my confidence grew by leaps and bounds and we were able to design a program that has since taken off with great success across the hospital. I was able to overcome my mental blocks and knowledge deficits to build a program that will truly help transform how we approach performance improvement and patient care," he says.

Case Study #2: Know the value you bring

Julie Zhuo knew she had things to say but she wasn't sure how to get heard. As a product design manager at Facebook, she had developed valuable expertise in the products she worked on. Yet, she lacked the confidence to share her ideas. She was used to being one of very few women in the room. That had been the case when she was studying computer science at Stanford and it was still true now that she was at Facebook. She knew this meant she needed to make a concerted effort to speak up. But being the minority voice wasn't the only reason she felt unsure of herself. She says that she also suffered from "imposter syndrome," feeling as if she hadn't earned a right to her ideas; she had somehow ended up where she was accidently, not through hard work.

Julie was intrigued when someone in HR told her about a workshop offered at Stanford by the Op-Ed Project. After attending and getting positive feedback about her ideas, Julie tried something she had never thought to do before: write an op-ed.

Last November, she published a piece in the New York Times about the danger of anonymity in online discussions. "It was a matter of someone saying you can do it," she explains. "It had never occurred to me that I could be published. But it actually wasn't hard at all." The reaction she got in the workshop and afterward back at Facebook boosted her confidence. "Since then, she's gotten a lot of support from colleagues, which has emboldened her to speak her mind. "Of course it's still a work in progress, but now I'm a much more confident speaker and writer," she says.
